What is known about IBS?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) otherwise known as spastic colon is
a bowel disorder that causes chronic abdominal pain, discomfort,
bloating and a change in bowel habits. It is considered a diagnosis
of exclusion with an estimated that 20% of the adult population of
Ireland suffer from IBS. While the exact cause remains unknown, many
researchers believe IBS is due to changes in nerves that control
sensations or muscle contractions in the bowel. It is also thought
the central nervous system may affect the colon.
Women are two to three times more likely than men to have IBS with
some theories suggesting hormonal changes also play a role. Triggers
for IBS can range from gas or pressure on your intestines to certain
foods, medications or emotions. Consumption of chocolate, milk and
alcohol result in constipation or diarrhea for some individuals.
Although IBS is a chronic non-life threatening condition, it is
widely accepted to have a serious affect on our emotional, social
and physical well-being. Digestion is one of the unconscious actions
our bodies carry out every day. This digestive function is affected
by our emotional state and significantly, IBS is often connected
with anxiety and stress.
How can hypnotherapy help my IBS?
IBS is a gut-level reaction to stress so reducing the stress
alleviates the symptoms. Therefore addressing the source of physical
or emotional triggers (that our disturb bowel function), will be
highly effective in eradicating IBS. Brain body reactions explain
how IBS symptoms such as diarrhoea and constipation can be directly
related to fears, anger and depression. Releasing emotions we may
not even be aware we harboured, yields amazing results for our
clients. Once free from these worries, hypnotherapy allows you to
regain control of your life!
So is there any evidence to verify the success of hypnotherapy in
treating IBS?
YES!!! Extensive medical research and scientific studies have
consistently proven hypnotherapy’s success in treating IBS. This
impact is clearly demonstrated in an
“Overview of Published Research To Date on Hypnosis for IBS” by
Olafur S. Palsson, Psy.D.
More and more GPs now recommend hypnotherapy as a treatment for
IBS.
How many sessions will I require?

Generally though our treatments will involve anywhere between 2-4

"It's as if my whole life has restarted. My IBS always meant
holidays or even a drive of any distance were out of bounds for me.
As I told you I was so mortified it took me years to get help from
you. Going to the doctor never really helped it. Now I am after
landing a job in the evenings at a shop in town. It might not sound
like much but for me it's incredible and my confidence is through
the roof!!! I just can't put into words what it means to have this
damn thing under control at long last."
